Waffles are a popular and easy-to-prepare dessert dish that is loved by very many for their variety and taste. The idea to make waffles for the first time came to the Germans, who called the new dessert from the liquid dough the word waffel - "honeycomb".
The history of the delicacy
The very first waffles were cooked back in medieval times, when they were perceived only as one of the varieties of regular biscuits. The distinctive features of such a "new cookie" became the technology of manufacturing with a traditional pattern on the surface of the treat in the form of an imprint and the composition of the waffle dough. Cooked it from cream, flour, water, sugar and eggs.
Historical evidence suggests that waffles were known both in ancient Greece and in Germany. The first mentions of this product date back to the 13th century, and in the 15th and 16th centuries only a person with noble pedigree could afford to bake such a dessert, because no one from the lower strata of the population knew about the recipe for the new dessert, it was kept in the strictest secrecy. On the American continent, waffles appeared in the 17th century with the mass emigration of the Dutch to these lands. In those days, it was an exclusively homemade dish, waffles were about 13 centimeters thick and until the 14th century were an indicator of poverty, because they were baked from leftover dough from bread mixed with water. Later, people learned to bake cakes with various syrups, and since then, waffles have become a confectionary delicacy available only to the select few.
According to the Belgian legend, waffles were invented in the 18th century by the order of the Belgian Prince of Liege. The crowned person wanted to try some incredible muffin, and the chef invented baking waffles, generously flavored the dough with vanilla. The aroma of vanilla struck the prince on the spot and the Belgian waffles became a favorite delicacy of the royal court. After some time, this dessert spread throughout Belgium. In the same 18th century, the first wafer desserts appeared in the Czech Republic. “Spa waffles” to this day are the national treasure of the Czech Republic, they are generously added with sugar and almonds, which give the dessert an unusual and aristocratic flavor.
Starting from the 60s of the 19th century, waffles have gained wide popularity, due to which they are beginning to be produced on an industrial scale. At the same time, industrial production of beet sugar, as well as baking equipment, began to develop, which contributed to the rapid growth of wafer distribution among the population.
Composition and types of confectionery
As part of the classic wafers there are no various preservatives, flavor enhancers or dyes. Therefore, their dough has a completely natural composition. What can not be said about their fillings, which in modern recipes can be stuffed with anything. The calorie content of dessert, which, as a rule, is quite high, depends on the fillings and their characteristics. On average, the energy value of stuffed waffles is about 342 kilocalories per 100 grams of product. Without a filling, this pastry is used as a basis for ice cream forms or as a supplement to berry desserts. On the basis of wafer cakes prepare cakes and pastries, rolls and various intricate desserts.
All existing varieties of this baking differ from each other exclusively by the fillings with which they are flavored. The most famous and beloved waffles of all include:
- crispy wafer leaves without filling, which are all used to complement various dessert dishes - ice cream, cakes and other things;
- stuffed desserts, in which there may be a filling, fudge, fatty filling or fruit and berry;
- fructose, fortified waffles, other dietary dessert types that are intended for people with certain health problems, or for those who carefully monitor their weight and figure.
Useful and harmful properties
The energy and nutritional value of this dessert is both a plus and a minus. Waffles are easily saturated, if hungry, the glucose in the composition is able to stimulate brain activity during mental work or some unnecessary loads. However, abusing waffles, it is easy to earn obesity and other serious consequences for their own health.
You can not eat this dessert for those who suffer from pancreatitis, problems of the gastrointestinal tract, struggling with overweight or diabetes. Many types of this delicacy are contraindicated for allergy sufferers, since it contains eggs, cream, sugar, flour and butter, as well as the filling, on which also depends on how safe the use of this dessert is.
Calorie waffles directly depends primarily on how fat and sweet they contain the filling. The wafer sheet itself contains about 340 kilocalories per 100 grams, but what it is anointed for can increase this figure by several times. Also, much depends on the dough for baking, which is of two varieties - sugar or butter.
The most common waffle dessert necessarily contains a fatty filling with all kinds of flavors. There are a lot of calories and dyes in such a product, but practically no benefit. Stabilizers and flavor enhancers can have different effects, but they can have a negative impact on human health; there are no minerals in colored strawberries inside the waffles. In addition, all this chemistry, as a rule, is most often sublimated by heavy confectionery fats, which readily react with it, but are not absorbed in the human body at all.
Thus, it is possible to calculate the approximate caloric value of the most popular waffles, which today are on sale in almost all retail chains:
- chocolate-covered dessert will total about 518 kilocalories;
- tasty homemade waffles will add about 490 kilocalories to the basic diet, and if raisins are present in them, this will slightly reduce the figure to 452 kilocalories;
- when condensed milk is added to dessert, the caloric value increases to 510 kilocalories;
- The classic dessert with fruit fillings (from natural fruits, not chemical ones) totals 350 kilocalories;
- famous waffles "Artek" have a caloric content of 495 kilocalories;
